Conception Rate, Farrowing Rate and Litter Size after Intrauterine Insemination with Cryopreserved Boar Semen in Spontaneous and Induced Ovulation Sows

چکیده
Introduction The procedure for artificial insemination (AI) in pigs using cryopreserved semen involves the deposition of a high number of cryopreserved spermatozoa (5-6 x10 cells) in a large volume of diluent (80-100 ml) into the cervix. Despite inseminating with this high sperm number, low fertility levels are usually obtained (about 20-30% conception and farrowing rates and 2-3 total piglets born per litter lower than those achieved by fresh semen) (1, 2). Therefore, the use of cryopreserved semen in commercial AI swine herds is still limited (3). Recently, a procedure for non-surgical intrauterine insemination (IUI) in sows, which allows the transcervical deposition of semen into the uterine body, has been developed (4, 5). The fertility rates achieved by IUI with fresh semen using 1x10 spermatozoa per dose were comparable to those of conventional AI with 3x10 spermatozoa per dose (4). Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the number of spermatozoa in the sperm reservoir at about 24 h after insemination was not significantly different between IUI and conventional AI (8). However, no fertility data are available using IUI with cryopreserved boar semen. The present study was conducted to evaluate fertility of sows after IUI with cryopreserved semen under field conditions.

Conception Rate and Litter Size in Multiparous Sows after Intrauterine Insemination Using Frozen-Thawed Boar Semen in a Commercial Swine Herd in Thailand
The aim of the present study was to determine the conception rate and litter size in sows after fixed time intra-uterine insemination using frozen-thawed boar semen in a commercial swine herd in Thailand. Sixty-nine Landrace multiparous sows were randomly allocated into two groups, including control (n=36) and treatment (n=33). The control sows were inseminated with extended fresh semen (3 × 10...

This study compared the reproductive performance of sows that were submitted to cervical artificial insemination (CAI) using concentrations of 3.5 x 10 spermatozoa per dose or intrauterine artificial insemination (IUAI) with 2, 1, or 0.5 x 10 spermatozoa per dose. Within all treatments, females were inseminated either after conventional estrus detection or after ultrasound-guided ovulation diag...

The present study determines fertilization rate and number of embryos on Day 2 after intrauterine insemination (IUI) and deep intrauterine insemination (DIUI) using frozen-thawed (FT) boar semen in multiparous sows. Twelve crossbred Landrace × Yorkshire multiparous sows were included. The sows were inseminated at 24 h after oestrus detection and reinseminated every 12 h until ovulation took pla...

There are various advantages, such as the preservation of genetic resources, an improvement of the reproduction performance in summer, long-distance transportation of semen and the possibility of progeny test, in the cryopreservation technique of boar semen. However, cryopreserved boar spermatozoa have not been routinely available to swine artificial insemination (AI) due to the lower conceptio...
متن کاملOptimum Strategies in Artificial Insemination, with Emphasis on the Timing Relative to Ovulation and the Role of the Boar
Optimised insemination strategies on pig farms aim at reducing the number of inseminations, without reducing reproductive performance. At the moment, one insemination with good quality semen can result in good fertilisation results when insemination takes place in a 24 h period before ovulation. However, knowledge of this optimal period is not sufficient to limit the number of inseminations to ...
